Longleaf Trace Birthday Challenge

DISTANCES:  Saturday, November 8, 2003, starting and finishing in Prentiss, Mississippi, the challenge is to run, walk, bike, roller blade or wheelchair your age in kilometers on the Longleaf Trace beginning at 6:00 a.m. The starting and finishing line is in the Longleaf Trace Park near Columbia Avenue in Prentiss, and registration will also be available at the Gateway Park in Hattiesburg on the Univ. of So. MS campus. The entire Trace will be supported. The course is marked in kilometers. Half marathon is marked for entrants desiring to complete the marathon distance. The course is out and back. Forty-two kilometers is just past Sumrall, provided you start in Prentiss. Aid stations will be provided at approximately three-mile intervals; fluids available at all stations, food at alternate stations, Sumrall to Hattiesburg stations will have fluids only. Eight Rest Rooms are available on the course. You may start anytime during the day. Start time should be scheduled to finish your “challenge distance” no later than 4:00 p.m. Food and entertainment will be available in the Longleaf Trace Park at Prentiss.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Longleaf Trace is a paved “Rails to Trails” running from Prentiss, Mississippi to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It meanders through beautiful forests, crosses live streams and passes scenic small lakes, and passes through small towns. The course is relatively flat. November is the peak month for fall foliage along the Trace. The course will start in Prentiss and be supported from Prentiss, Mississippi to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The distance from Prentiss to Sumrall and back totals 84 kilometers (52.08 miles).

 

ENTRY FEES AND AWARDS:  There is no entry fee; however, donations are welcomed and encouraged to aid in offsetting event costs. The challenge is for the individual---just you, your age, and the course. Custom medallions will be presented to the first 300 individuals to register and complete their individual challenge. Free entertainment will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Park at Prentiss, Mississippi. There will also be birthday cake for all participants. Prizes will be given away every hour for students 16 and under completing their challenge, with a Grand Prize drawing, at 6:00 p.m., for a new bicycle to be given away. Must be present to win.
